Last week I challenged my congregation to share their testimony, talk about how they became a Christian, how they came to faith, and record it on a video, and I asked them to post it on their social media. I was so excited to see some of the people that heard the challenge respond to the challenge.
Of course, I recorded my challenge, but everybody expects me to be saved and me to be able to articulate my testimony because I’m a pastor. So, it’s no big deal. But I think it was a great thing to have these young men and young women recording their testimony, talking about how Jesus is so important to their lives. So, I realized something as I was just thinking and praying over the whole situation and that is: that I know that a lot of people aren’t necessarily comfortable with sharing their testimony because they just don’t know what to say.
So, what I wanted to do is just share three easy steps to sharing your faith testimony or any testimony that you have of what God is doing in your life. It’s simpler than you think. A lot of times we overthink it and we’re so concerned about not getting anything wrong, that we just don’t share. But just like any complete, whole story, there’s a beginning, a middle, and an end.
If you’re going to talk about your faith in Christ and how it became real in your life, the first thing you need to do is discuss who you were before Christ. Talk about your life about before Christ, summarize who you were, summarize what type of lifestyle you were living, and talk about what was missing (because there’s always something missing).
The second thing is talk about your conversion experience, whether or not you grew up in a Church and so, you had heard about Jesus your entire life, or there was something sudden, almost like a dramatic experience or dramatic conversion. Maybe that was your experience so you share that. You talk about how you became a Christian. What is it that led you directly to confess faith in Jesus Christ as Lord? So that’s the second step.
The third step is talk about how you changed. So you were this person before, then you met Jesus Christ, and you gave him, gave yourself to him. What happened next? How did you change? What in your life is different now, because you met Jesus?
So that’s the three steps: who were you before (what was your life like before Christ), what led you to Christ (what were the circumstances behind your conversion experience), and then what’s changed since then? I’m not asking you to be perfect, just share your praise and let God get the glory out of it. People need to know who Jesus is, they need to know who he is in your life. So this is our tool, our testimony is the power of God in that situation.
God bless you, see you next time.
